In 1938 at Children's Hospital Boston, Robert Gross, MD, performed the first-ever repair of a congenital heart defect in a child. More than 65 years later, Children's is still a world leader in cardiac innovations.
Most notably, in 2001 doctors at Children's successfully repaired a potentially fatal heart defect in a fetus while it was still in the mother's womb. It marked the first time in the world that a congenital heart defect was prevented through fetal surgery.
