Who we are

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MR or MRI) at Boston Children's Hospital performs pediatric MRIs in a friendly, child-centered environment designed to make your child's experience as pleasant as possible. Our dedicated staff has years of experience imaging children and teens.

Physicians order MRI studies to rule out or diagnose diseases. The technology produces incredibly detailed pictures of your child's organs, bones and tissues without using ionizing radiation (x-rays). Instead, it uses strong magnets, radiofrequency waves and powerful computers to generate 2- and 3-dimensional images of a given organ or body part.

We use protocols and procedures developed specifically for babies and children, which means age-appropriate care for your child and the best possible images for the radiologist.

We encourage parents-and favorite teddy bears or stuffed animals-to remain in the room while the MRI is being performed. Your child can watch a favorite DVD with our special video goggles or listen to an iPod or MP3 on our headsets while we take the pictures of your child's body. 

Our expertise

MRI specialists: Our radiologists are highly trained experts in interpreting MRIs in children of all ages, including fetal MR.

Technology: We have a ceiling-mounted, retractable MR unit in a special operating room for children having neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery. We operate five other units in Boston and Waltham for patients having inpatient and outpatient exams.

MRIs without sedation: Our "Try Without" program helps children as young as 4 undergo MRIs without sedation.

Sedation or anesthesia: Our team of experienced nurse anesthetists and anesthesiologists take care of your child right in the MRI unit.
