Children’s honors two of its finest

[ printer-friendly version ]

n Nov. 21, Children’s honored two employees with the 2002 David S. Weiner Award for Leadership and Innovation in Child Health. Grace Peters, manager of Interpreter Services, and David DeMaso, MD, associate psychiatrist-in-chief, were selected from a field of 32 nominees for the impact they have made at Children’s and their commitment to child health. Both winners received a $20,000 grant for a Children’s program that they selected.

Peters was nominated for leading Children’s Interpreter Services Department in an expansion that improved its staffing, nearly doubled its patient encounters and extended its services to include 43 languages. As noted in her nomination, Peters is widely admired “for her commitment to fostering team spirit within the department” as well as “establishing wonderful relationships with other departments.”

Peters’ grant will fund an Interpreter Skills Training pilot project that she and her staff have developed to train bilingual Children’s employees in medical interpretation.

DeMaso was nominated for attending to the emotional and psychological needs of physically ill children, for the development of acclaimed “prevention interventions,” for his mentorship of younger clinicians and for developing mental health programs for staff and the community. DeMaso’s grant will fund an outcomes study evaluating his Experience Journal project, a Web-based interventional tool that allows patients and families to share their personal experiences with childhood depression and other illnesses.

According to M. Laurie Camissa, Esq., vice president of Child Advocacy and chair of the award selection committee, the DSW award was originally intended for a single recipient. “Choosing a winner was very difficult for the selection committee because every one of the nominees was extraordinarily deserving,” says Camissa. “After extensive discussion and numerous ballots, the committee was evenly divided between the final two candidates, and it only made sense to honor two employees this year.”

Camissa notes that there were sufficient funds to award two $20,000 grants this year because an award was not made in 2001. If the same situation comes up in the future, the awardees will split a single $20,000 grant. —CM

The selection process for the David S. Weiner Award was not easy. Congratulations to all the DSW Award nominees!
