Mayor, hospital brass announce success and expansion of career initiatives

Dr. Mandell praises the establishment of the Boston Health Care and Research Training Institute as Mayor Thomas Menino (left) prepares to present a check to Bridges to the Future.

On May 28, Mayor Thomas Menino, James Mandell, MD, president and CEO, Sandra Fenwick, COO, and the leaders of seven other Boston health care and research facilities applauded the success of the Bridges to the Future career ladder program. At the event they also announced the establishment of the Boston Health Care and Research Training Institute, a new initiative that will expand career ladder programs in the health industry.

Mayor Menino and the Neighborhood Jobs Trust, a city of Boston job agency, also announced $220,000 in new funding to support Bridges to the Future, a program introduced last year at Children’s to train and support workers in health care and research settings. The program enables employees to advance professionally while benefiting health care organizations by filling critical personnel shortages.

The Training Institute will provide training and education to 550 people from the eight organizations, including 120 from Children’s. According to Fenwick, 24 employees have completed the foundation skills training so far, and retention among Bridges trainees at Children’s is 95 percent. Already two participants have been promoted, and an additional 12 have identified careers that they are now pursuing through further education and training.

“We are committed to investing in the potential of our current employees and retaining the best and brightest,” Fenwick said at the event. “With our commitment to training and education, and the help of the Bridges program and the Training Institute, we are saying to our employees: We want to invest in you and your talents, and we want you to make a career with us.”
