Kohl’s Cares for kids

A Kohl’s Department Store associate recently attended the Martha Eliot Health Center Health Fair to give Children’s a generous $465,484 gift—it’s 100 percent of the proceeds from 2008 sales of Kohl’s Cares for Kids plush toys and books. Kohl’s also provided prizes: lunch bags for a scavenger hunt with a twist. Instead of toys or sweets, kids searched for healthful foods.

Kohl’s gift supports the Kohl’s Fitness and Nutrition program, part of Children’s Fitness in the City (FIC) initiative. FIC provides Boston community health centers with weight management services to combat the city’s escalating childhood obesity rates. A loyal hospital supporter, Kohl’s has contributed more than $3 million to Children’s since 2002.

Child Advocacy hosts Community Health Poster Day

On Oct. 19, the Office of Child Advocacy hosted its second Community Health Poster Day in the Patient Entertainment Center. The event highlights the hospital's community health mission by displaying community work from various clinical departments. Twenty-six different projects presented posters, illustrating the broad range of services being delivered in the community. Sample services include asthma, early intervention, fitness and nutrition, housing support, injury prevention, mental health and support for young parents and foster parents.

While some programs are still in the pilot phase with limited results, others have been in place for years and are able to show the healthful impact they are having on the lives of children and families. The event also allowed program staff to connect with one another and share ideas.

To learn more about the posters on display at this event, or how to be involved next year, please contact Christine Healey at 617-919-3053.
