On May 14, our son, Kyle, age 12, took one step, then could take no more. He cried in agony from a disabling, unexplained pain in both legs that quickly rendered him helpless and confined him to a wheelchair. After two months of watching our child require assistance with even mundane daily tasks, we wheeled him into the Pain Clinic at Children’s Hospital Boston. The friendly and knowledgeable staff quickly referred us to David Leslie, MD, at the Waltham location.
Dr. Leslie diagnosed Kyle with regional sympathetic dystrophy, or RSD. He assured us that he could help our son and that Kyle would soon be walking again. Two weeks after our meeting, Kyle entered the Mayo Family Pediatric Pain Rehabilitation Clinic (PPRC) at Children’s. On day three of the program, Kyle walked out the door unassisted. On day four, Kyle walked up our front steps and by day five, he was back on his Ripstick, a two-wheeled skateboard.
It’s now day 15 and Kyle is running the 100-foot sprint in less than nine seconds—a feat he couldn’t do even before he had RSD! While Kyle’s progress was nothing less than a miracle, we knew it was possible because of the amazing staff at the PPRC. We are so thankful to Dr. Leslie, Katie, Melinda, Emily, Laura, Gloria, Judy and Kathleen for all their support, care and encouragement. They never let Kyle give up and pushed him to his full potential. As our son graduates from the program, we make room for other children who are unfortunate in their ailment but fortunate to benefit from this phenomenal program and staff.
Forever grateful,
Mark, Julia, and Kyle Masury
Raymond, NH
