Children’s shows the public a Cause for Wonder

[ printer-friendly version ]

Scalpel, please: Children’s President and CEO James Mandell, MD, shows Steve Karp his surgical skills as the two cut cake during the Cause for Wonder public kickoff. Karp, who chairs the Cause for Wonder campaign, is the chairman of the Children’s Hospital Trust Board and chairman and CEO of New England Development.

hildren’s launched the public phase of its $250 million fundraising campaign last month, catapulting the largest fundraising event in the hospital’s history into the public eye. The campaign, known as Cause for Wonder, is in its third year and has already raised $165 million. It is scheduled to run through 2005.

The funds raised by Cause for Wonder have fueled construction of the new research building, the ambitious clinical expansion project, and enhanced training and outreach programs.

The public launch of the campaign was celebrated September 14 with a family-friendly event, “Day of Wonder and Whimsy,” in the hospital lobby. The event featured interactive activities where children (and kids at heart) could create their own stethoscopes, get a finger cast, explore the workings of human vision, and learn how the tiny zebrafish is helping Children’s researchers understand genetic disorders. The departments of Cardiology, Ophthalmology, Surgery, Orthopaedics, Hematology/Oncology and Child Life all contributed hands-on exhibits for the event. In addition, guests toured the new 295,000-square-foot research building, which will officially open in October.

In the next year, the Cause for Wonder campaign will launch its employee campaign, giving hospital staff the opportunity to participate in the fundraising effort.
