SCAR technology gets a closer look

n June, Boston was the host city for the 2003 Symposium for Computer Applications in Radiology, an annual national conference that brings engineers, scientists, radiologists and technologists together to advance the use of information technology in medical imaging. For the first time, Children's Department of Radiology played several important roles in the event.

S. Ted Treves, MD, chief of Nuclear Medicine, chaired a panel on picture archiving and communication systems (PACS). Treves, along with panel co-chair John Speziale, director of Radiology Information Technology, David Kirshner, chief financial officer, and experts from other area teaching hospitals, led over 500 attendees in a discussion on how to share and view radiological images throughout a large institution.

In addition, members of the Nuclear Medicine and Radiology departments, including Sharon Antiles, MPH, William Tellier, and D. Benét Gaytos, presented papers at the symposium, and Children’s staff led tours to demonstrate the hospital’s PACS system and voice recognition technology.
