Basic Life Support (BLS) program has expanded the hospital's Automated
External Defibrillator (AED) Program with the installation of 14
new Automated External Defibrillators. This brings the total up
to 20 AEDs that are placed across the hospital
campus.
The AEDs are placed in outpatient clinical and administrative areas
where the code team cannot quickly respond or in buildings, like
21 Autumn, that are only covered by 911.
The devices are designed to restart the natural heart rhythm of
someone who has gone into cardiac arrest. They are fully automated
and provide users with spoken, step-by-step instructions.
The new AEDs are designed to be used on adults; and when using
special pediatric pads that reduce the electrical charge the device
delivers, are also safe to use on children.
BLS Program staff is conducting free training classes over the
next few weeks for employees who work in the areas AEDs are placed.
"The devices are very simple to use-they analyze a victim's
heart rhythm and only deliver an electrical shock if defibrillation
is appropriate," says Nancy Famolare,
