Stephen Karp to chair Board of Trustees

tephen Karp, a New England real estate developer with more than 20 years of involvement with Children’s, has been named the new chair of Children’s Board of Trustees.

The Board of Trustees is an 18-member, voluntary panel of business and community leaders, responsible for the highest level of oversight of the hospital. In the past the board has made important decisions such as the hiring of the hospital’s president and CEO, and authorizing the construction of the new clinical and research buildings.

Karp has been a member of the board since 1990, and is the founding chairman of the Children’s Hospital Trust Board, a separate group that oversees the fundraising arm of the hospital. "Steve has demonstrated his skill in drawing talented and committed people to the institution," says James Mandell, MD, president and CEO. "He is a practical visionary who will help us advance pediatric care in the 21st century."

Karp has many ideas about changes he wants to make at Children’s. First, however, he plans to immerse himself in the top issues, including the need for more space, recruitment of top-notch scientists and improved customer service.

Outgoing board Chairman Bill Boyan handed leadership to Karp after six extraordinary years at the helm, and will continue to serve as a board member. During Boyan’s tenure, the hospital recruited a new leadership team, regained its financial stability and embarked upon strategic research and clinical expansion.

"Bill led us through one of the most difficult times with strength and direction," says Karp. "He was always open to suggestions, criticism and conversation. I look forward to his continued involvement and advice."

"Both Steve and Bill are passionate advocates who have been instrumental in maintaining the hospital’s missions," says Mandell.
