One goal of Joseph Madsen's research is to combine clinical research and basic research--using data from the former in the latter. For example, the study of human electrocorticograms recorded during behavioral cortical tasks is used to answer basic questions about cortical physiology. It is also used to point the way toward safer surgery to control epilepsy by improving the ability to map function. This opportunity is uniquely available because the need and benefits of neurosurgical intervention. Advanced technologies, such as digital signal processing (DSP), wavelet analysis, and cutting edge cognitive science combine in this new laboratory.
He and colleagues are also studying the role of electrostimulation of the vagus nerve in the treatment of epilepsy.
